Grassroots Women Condemn Attacks on Civil Society, Demand Government Action.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 13, 2026 — A coalition of grassroots women leaders in Nairobi has condemned the rising intimidation, harassment and attacks against civil society organizations, warning that the trend threatens accountability, democracy and community development.

Grassroots women leaders stand in solidarity with civil society organizations, calling for an end to harassment and the protection of constitutional freedoms.

In a press statement, the women said civil society organizations play a vital role in helping ordinary Kenyans demand accountability over stalled projects, poor public services and the use of public resources.

"When these organizations are threatened for asking such questions, it is not only their voices that are under attack; it is ours too," the statement said.

The women noted that corruption and lack of accountability continue to affect families through poor healthcare, neglected markets, failed development projects and the rising cost of living.

They also expressed concern over what they described as growing cases of intimidation, unlawful surveillance, arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances targeting civic actors and organizations promoting public accountability.

The coalition called on the government to end harassment of civil society organizations and human rights defenders, investigate reported abuses, guarantee the safety of grassroots leaders and community organizers, and protect every Kenyan's constitutional right to organize, speak freely and hold leaders accountable without fear.

"Their fight is our fight because accountability protects every community," the statement added.

The statement was signed by Grassroots Women of Nairobi, representing community leaders, chama leaders, mama mbogas, salon owners and women community organizers.
